Description: A lovely Viola d’amore made by a fantastic Italian/ Argentinian maker Luigi Rovatti from 1903. Beautiful sound and wonderful projection.
Back Length: 38.8cm. String Length: 36.8cm.
Italian maker believed to have been a student of Enrico Rocca (although there is no archival documentation to this effect, the two were cousins). Left Italy for Argentina in 1886.
ROVATTI, Luigi. Born 1861 Genoa Italy, died 1931 Buenos Aires Argentina Pupil of Giuseppe and Enrico Rocca. Established in Buenos Aires from 1885. Prolific maker: 1,000 instruments including violins, violas, cellos, and guitars. Generally good work on the Rocca model. After 1900 branded: ‘Luigi Rovatti Fabricanti’. Printed label: Luigi Rovatti / Fece in Buenos Aires.
