Description: The W. E. Hill and Sons firm was one of the longest lasting firms in the world, certainly in England. Their roots run deep, dating back to at least 1753 when Joseph Hill was crafting and restoring fine instruments. The firm continued to produce the highest standard of craftsmanship throughout the centuries. Many of the top bowmakers trained in the Hill and Sons firm, including James Tubbs, Arthur Bultitude, William Charles Retford, and many others. From this, the firm was able to gain a healthy reputation for producing the finest quality bows.
Arthur John Barnes (1888 – 1945) originally trained as a cabinet maker, Arthur J. Barnes worked for the firm of W.E. Hill & Sons from 1919 to 1939, when he left to serve in WWII. Though his deafness hindered his ability to communicate, he was a skilled craftsman. Barnes' bows for the firm bear the number 5.
This bow bears the makers mark as well as the year indicated of 1931. Brands of CURTIS, PHILA and the serial number of “53” on the butt end of the stick. This bow is an exceptional viola bow with gorgeous, dark pernambuco and mounted in gold and ebony with a “blind” frog. The bow is strong yet light and articulate. Draws a beautiful rich tone with clear, clean articulation. The bow was part of the illustrious Curtis Collection and bears the brands to indicate that. Certified by Reuning & Sons. Weight: 65.8 grams.
