Georg Meiwes was born in Münster, Germany, and began his career as a violin maker in the workshops of J. Kasak and G. Groth, training in French restoration and setup technique. In 1997 he received his master Diploma from the Munich Chamber of Crafts with distinction (Bayerischer Staatspreis in Silver) and worked as a master craftsman in London, England, for Morris & Smith and J. & A. Beare. Summer 2000 Georg moved to America where he was employed as a restorer by J. & A. Beare in Dallas, Texas. Since 2003 he lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. After working for P. Prier as workshop foreman and teacher for the Violin Making School of America, he established his own business in 2009 focusing primarily on new making. He received certificates of workmanship for violin, cello, and quartet, as well as a certificate of merit for tone for viola at the 2014 Violin Making Society of America competition. As an accomplished violinist Georg’s main focus are the mechanics of sound, particularly the connection between sound color and projection.
