Description: 16-1/2” viola made by Philadelphia maker Helmuth Keller, and modeled after the Vieuxtemps Gasparo da Salo viola, in particularly fine condition. The two-piece maple back is of medium-narrow curl descending from the center joint. The two-piece spruce table is of medium to fine grain broadening towards the flanks. The varnish is a reddish orange brown color over golden ground. Measurements: Length of Back: 420 mm, Upper Bouts: 208 mm, Middle Bouts: 143.5 mm, Lower Bouts: 248 mm, String Length: 366 mm.
This viola was owned and performed on by Ingrid Hutman of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The sound is rich and penetrating.
