Description: François Jude Gaulard was born in Mirecourt in 1787. Gaulard died in 1857 Troyes France. He was the son of Louis Gaulard. His early work suggests the influence of Pajeot. From 1855 worked in Troyes with his son Louis Auguste. He had a very prolific output, using pernambuco, ironwood, snakewood, and other coarser imported hardwoods.

This bow is an exceptional example of his work from 1830-40. The wood is of Swartzia wood of a dark, chocolate brown color. The frog is ebony and silver mounted with a later silver ferrule. A mother of pearl shield is inlaid on each side of the frog.

The non-original, one-piece button, is made of bone.

This is a rare example of this French master who resided in Mirecourt, France.
