(1842 – 1901) Eugenio Degani is said to be the founder of the modern Venetian school of violin making. He was born in Merlara, just outside Montaganana and after training with his father Domenico, he established his own workshop in Montagnana in 1867 before moving to Venice in 1888. His instruments show precise craftsmanship with personal style, although he occasionally copied makers such as Stradivari, Guarneri and Montagnana. His elongated, deeply carved scrolls are particularly characteristic, and some violins from his Montagnana period have double purfling. His son Giulio followed him in the tradition and assisted him.
A powerful and complex sound. Rich and penetrating.
